Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (abbreviated ALS, also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease) is a form of motor neuron disease. ALS is aprogressive, fatal, neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of motor neurons, the nerve cells in the central nervous system that control voluntary muscle movement. The condition is often called Lou Gehrig's disease in North America, after the famous New York Yankees baseball player who was diagnosed with the disease in 1939. Now a new hero, fitness pioneer Augie Nieto, is fighting his own courageous battle against ALS. After receiving his ALS diagnosis in 2005, Augie decided to transform despair into hope. He and his wife Lynne allied themselves with the Muscular Dystrophy Association to create MDA’s Augie’s Quest. This aggressive initiative is now making history by funding fast-track, innovative research to conquer ALS once and for all.
